A creak every time you turn over can make a perfectly comfortable bed frustrating to sleep in. Before replacing the frame, find out which part is moving. A loose corner fitting, a slat rubbing against its support or a headboard touching the wall can produce a surprisingly loud noise.
On a wooden bed, start with the connections between the side rails, headboard and footboard, then work towards the slats and centre support. The sound may travel through the frame, so the place where you hear it is not always the place causing it.
The checks below will help you identify the source, make suitable adjustments and recognise when a damaged part needs proper repair.
Find the noise before taking the frame apart
Remove the bedding and check for visible damage before testing anything. If a rail is split, a bracket has pulled away or the bed is sagging noticeably, stop using it until the damaged part has been assessed.
For a frame that appears intact, work through these checks:

Rule out wall contact. With help, lift the bed slightly away from the wall. Avoid dragging it, which can strain the joints. Check whether the headboard or footboard is touching nearby furniture.

Separate the mattress from the frame. Lift the mattress off with help and place it on a clean, suitable surface. Apply gentle pressure to different areas and listen. A noise that follows the mattress needs a different investigation.

Check the empty frame. Gently press and release each corner and side rail. Do not stand or kneel on individual slats.

Check the floor. Walk around the bed and listen for the same noise. A creaking floorboard can sound like a faulty bed frame.
Change one thing at a time and repeat the movement that produced the sound. That makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.

These are starting points for inspection, rather than a diagnosis based on the sound alone.
Tighten loose fittings without forcing the wood
A joint with a little play can move whenever you turn over. Check the bolts and screws connecting the side rails to the headboard and footboard, using the assembly instructions to identify the correct fittings.
With the mattress removed and the frame properly supported, use the correct screwdriver, Allen key or spanner. Tighten loose fittings gradually by hand, following any tightening specification in the instructions. Check that the connecting parts are seated correctly before tightening them.
Stop once the fitting is secure. Excessive force can damage the timber, strip a screw hole or pull a threaded insert out of position. A power driver makes it easier to overtighten small fittings.
If a screw keeps turning without gripping, or a bolt becomes loose again almost immediately, further tightening is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. Inspect the fixing and surrounding wood, and ask the manufacturer about the correct repair or replacement part.

Check whether the wooden slats are rubbing
Slats can make noise where their ends rest on the side rails or fit into holders. Remove them only as the assembly instructions allow, keeping track of their position and orientation.
Look for cracked slats, broken holders, missing original pads and polished patches where surfaces have been rubbing. Refit any displaced slats and replace damaged parts with the correct specification.
If the design allows it, a thin, securely attached felt pad at a rubbing contact point may reduce friction. It must not lift the slat out of its holder, interfere with a fixing or make the support uneven. Replace original cushioning with the specified material where available.
Avoid stuffing thick fabric under the slats or changing their spacing to silence the bed. The base still needs to support the mattress correctly. Make sure the centre support and feet are stable
If your frame has a centre rail and support legs, check that they are attached securely and positioned as shown in the instructions. A missing, tilted or incorrectly adjusted support can allow unwanted movement beneath the mattress.
Check that all the bed's feet sit securely on the floor. Adjust any levelling feet according to the manufacturer's guidance. Raising a centre leg too far can distort the frame, while leaving it short of the floor can prevent it from providing support.
For feet that slide on a smooth surface, use suitable furniture grippers compatible with the flooring. Felt can protect a surface but may also allow sliding, so choose the material for the problem you have identified. Avoid unstable stacks of cardboard or loose packing under a leg.
Check the headboard separately
A tapping noise behind your pillow may come from a headboard moving against the wall. Inspect its fixings and check whether the movement happens at the attachment point or only where it touches the wall.
Secure loose fittings first. If the structure is sound and wall contact remains the issue, leave a small clearance or use suitable protective bumpers. Bumpers should not conceal a loose or damaged connection.
If you need to replace a damaged detachable headboard, compare the dimensions and attachment method before choosing from different headboards. Matching the mattress width alone does not confirm that the fittings will work with your frame.
Could changes in humidity be affecting the frame?
Wood exchanges moisture with the surrounding air and can swell or shrink as its moisture content changes, as explained in the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook. In a bed frame, this movement may change how closely parts fit together and contribute to rubbing or looseness.
If the noise appeared after a change in the room's conditions, inspect the joints again rather than assuming the bed has worn out. Keep the frame away from direct radiator heat and avoid repeatedly wetting the timber when cleaning. Follow the finish manufacturer's care instructions.
Humidity is one possible contributor. It does not explain away a cracked rail, broken holder or missing support leg.
Avoid quick fixes that hide a bigger problem
Spraying lubricant across the whole frame is a poor first step. It may miss the actual contact point, affect the finish or reach fittings that should remain dry. Use a lubricant only where the manufacturer recommends it for that particular material and connection.
Similarly, adding glue to every joint can make a frame intended for disassembly difficult to repair or move. Glue and improvised packing are not substitutes for repairing split timber or replacing damaged hardware.

When does a creaking wooden bed need replacing?
A secure frame with one rubbing contact point may only need a small adjustment. Replacement becomes more relevant when a load-bearing rail is badly damaged, joints no longer hold securely or suitable replacement parts are unavailable.
If repair is no longer practical, compare bed frames by their support structure, mattress compatibility, stated load limits and availability of spare parts. Material or appearance alone will not tell you how stable a bed will be.
After any repair, put the mattress back and test the bed gently under normal use. A successful fix should leave the frame stable as well as quiet. If the same fitting repeatedly loosens or the noise comes with visible movement, have the connection assessed before continuing to use the bed.
